The two tales of safety.
By dan | October 6, 2009
The Associated Press writer, Julie Pace, published this story on Tuesday October 6th 2009 titled :Â Obama: US ‘making real progress’ fighting terror. I found this one at Charter dotnet daily News.
In it she quotes ‘President” Obama pledging to keep Americans and America safe from terrorist threats of attack on US soil.
“No one can ever promise that there won’t be another attack on American soil,” Obama said. “But I can promise you this: I pledge to do everything in my power as president to keep America safe. And I pledge to give all of you the tools and support you need to get that job done here at home.”
To tell you the truth, reading this made me feel good about President Obama; that is until I really started thinking deeper about what he said.
After some noodle-work I came to think of safety as having at least two distinguishable tales they tell. One tale tells of safety as being protected and safe from something but at the same time safe or saved for something else.
In the president’s case he tells us he is pledging to keep us safe from those things terror related. I suspect that would include keeping Americans safe from nations declaring war against us as well.
It doesn’t say anything about domestic enemies. A domestic enemy could be anyone doing what is harmful to all Americans. So how about those of a political persuasion doing things detrimental to Americans’ economic safety? Will president Obama provide tools and support to protect American workers from complete financial collapse due to insidious political agendas causing jobs to disappear at a very alarming rate?
Jobs are what Americans need. Manufacturing jobs would be a great place to start. One way to secure manufacturing jobs might be to limit certain widgets we import and begin producing them here at home. That could be all sorts of things electronic. All I know is increasing taxes on industry won’t create jobs, and not doing anything about limiting imports won’t help either. Americans need to shop a Walmart filled with 90% American made goods. Drilling for our own oil might be another place we could start for stimulating job creation.
We could entice industries with tax breaks for providing the means of production, by moving their plants back home to the US.
Now I’m certain China won’t look too kindly upon such an action but so what. That part of the world already is in discussions of dropping the dollar as the standing global currency. Maybe its time to focus on strengthening our currency by bringing some of our production base back home.
And that segways me into discussing ‘what we are safe or saved for.’ Are we going to be kept safe so we can experience a wilting American economy, one that is losing jobs by the 10’s of thousands daily, one where social safety nets are in mass production driving up the tax burden on the nation’s producers, where the federal government grows by leaps and bounds faster than any other industry?
Or, are we safe and saved to once more sparkle and shine brightly like a beacon of light on a hill the peoples of the world can see from afar causing them to yearn to come to America to pursue their dreams, to work for fair wages, nurture families and live free or not?
