Talking Smart Grid

By dan | March 5, 2009

Good morning friends… Thursday… no work this week for me because the wood industry is backing down like somebody put a heavy foot on a brake pedal. I will survive … I think. What?

Moving on… Smart Grid is what I wanted to talk about. Today local IBM radio announcements are beginning to speak about the smart grid… 10% savings on bill … controlling our energy usage.

Up here in our part of the nation I am sure energy companies will be rabid about getting everyone on a smart grid. Minnesota Power and Superior Water Light and Power are the major distributors of energy.

Our region is huge and homes are spread apart sometimes with miles in between. Meter Readers must spend a large amount of time and fuel driving from one account to another manually logging energy usage.

Now I admit I am no expert on the grid technology however it’s my understanding it operates using RF frequency and some type of computer chip. Using RF a Meter Reader can simply get within a certain distance – log into your Personal Smart Grid Account and download your usage. They can also from the same technology control your usage. You may have heard of the story this winter of the elderly man who was defaulted on his electric payments and his energy was turned off which resulted in his death. Smart Grid is what he had.

Recently I came across some news articles I didn’t get real deep into but they infer that smart grid companies are debating whether or not to line up for some of the Federal Stimulus money.

My opinion is this is a mistake. If smart grid companies take stimulus money from the Fed they in essence will be under some degree of government control. That means the government is now in your home even more than they already are.

Push back against the rising tide of government control of our private lives – not grow and strengthen and enable more control.

I am not the smartest person. I sometimes wonder if I am even average. Yet even I can see through this. Transparency rules.

Nigh night friends.
