Poorness in Duluth to poor “Ness” in Duluth.

By dan | October 14, 2008

Poorness in Duluth is nothing new to the greater portion of the local population in this region of the country. But poor “Ness” who is Don Ness is new. He is the new Duluth Mayor Elect and he is all tangled up in trying to keep the city of Duluth off the bankruptcy rolls.

Today he passed an increase in home owner taxes to cover the city’s cost to maintain city lights. $3.50 per month will help Duluth save money in the long run says Ness with the support of his city council. It will alleviate the burden on the city government which is what local residents and local businesses need and want he adds. He also realizes it merely shifts the burden over to those local residents and local businesses. He failed to add that they wouldn’t want that.

Tomorrow is Blog Action Day 2008 and this year the topic of discussion is Global Poverty. As a participant I know some things about poverty through experience and through research. I know some poverty is voluntary, some is not voluntary. $3.50 additional taxation for street light maintenance would be classed as not voluntary. The City of Ness probably just sees it as one less gallon of gas you can buy. That $3.50 is one less pack of generic cigarettes you can buy. It’s one less gallon of milk for the children.

So really it can be said Duluth is depriving you of your money. They are withholding this money from you because you don’t pay and it will trigger a lien against you. Not paying may even mean they will deprive you of other city services. This is poverty by design.

So as increased local taxes dig deeper holes for the poor in Duluth who are already struggling to keep afloat, the government fills its coffers even more.

School districts are next friends. When the local governing bodies look to you for more taxes to support a declining studentry, just shake your head and say No to Poor Ness in Duluth.
