My Blog Action Day 2008 Poverty Solution: Go Shopping.
By dan | October 15, 2008
This is the third of my Blog Action Day 2008 posts. Over the last few days guess what has been on my mind? My first two posts will clue you in on how I feel about poverty locally and globally.
Then my thoughts began to move toward answering to myself what I have been doing to relieve those deprived of the standard common day to day items they need? Then it occurred to me I have been doing it in a way that is quite colorful and rewarding and personally profitable. Shopping. Thats right, shopping thrift stores.
As the world reels in financial uncertainty people are changing their buying habits. Budgets are tightening as food and fuel prices go up but wages and government assistance stagnates. In the U.S. statistics show a 20% increase in thrift store shopping.
I shop our local Good Will and our local Salvation Army. You can find very good deals on things you don’t need to buy at new prices. When you do spend a buck, it goes to feed, house, nurture people in extreme poverty conditions.
So someone gets financial assistance on both ends – the buyer with a fair cheap price, and the recipient receives financial assistance to help someone in dire financial need.
Here is even a better reason to shop at a Good Will or Salvation Army: you may just hit the big one. Sometimes you find something rare and valuable and you can resell it on ebay or Craigs List for huge profits. That’s another reason why I go shopping at thrift stores: The income.
So here is my Blog Action Day poverty solution. Go shopping. Good Will and Salvation Army is a great way to participate all year long sheltering others, feeding others, providing health care for others, spiritually lifting up others while having fun in the hunt for hidden treasure that could lift you up. Happy Shopping.
